Ignition System

Ignition System

Exhaust System

To have an efficient running engine, there must be the correct amount of fuel mixed with the correct amount of air. These must be present in a sealed container and shocked by right amount of heat at the correct time. With total efficiency, the engine would release extremely low amount of pollutants in its exhaust. Although total efficiency is not possible at this time, late-model engines emit very low amount of pollutants, thanks to emission control device.

To have efficient engines, the basic engine needs highly efficient, fuel, and emission control systems. Although there are many different designs of these systems, the designs are similar in operation.

1. FUNCTION

The function of the ignition system is to produce a spark in the engine

cylinder towards the end of the compression stroke. In a four-stroke engine,

a spark should occur in each cylinder after two revolutions of the crankshaft,

whereas in a two-stroke engine a spark in each cylinder is required every

revolution of the crankshaft. Thus, for instance, in a 6-cylinder 4 stroke engine

running at 5000 r.p.m., the number of sparks required per minute will be

15000 and these have to be timed very accurately.

2. REQUIREMENTS OF AN IGNITION SYSTEM

1. Spark at the plug electrodes must be regular and synchronously timed with respect to the cylinder-piston position at all speeds and loads on the engine.

2. The spark should be sufficiently strong so as to start ignition of the charge. Since lean air fuel mixtures are less conductive, they require higher ignition voltages. Thus on modern emission- controlled engines that use lean mixtures, higher-voltage ignition system is required. Moreover, due to higher secondary voltage in these systems, it becomes necessary to increase the electrical insulation.

3. It should be light and compact.

4. The system must be easy to maintain.

5. It should be adaptable to mass production.

6. It must not cause radio interference.

3. TYPES OF IGNITION SYSTEM

A battery of 12 volts is generally employed. However, a very high voltage surge (of up to 25,000 volts in modern engines) is required for ignition purposes. The actual high voltage at which the spark occurs is called breakdown voltage and it depends upon so many factors, viz., the gap, polarity and condition of plug electrodes, condition of plug insulation, moisture on the distributor cap and spark plugs and pressure, temperature and type of mixture in the combustion chamber. Used spark plugs may require fairly higher voltage to fire than the new plugs because of increase in the gap and rounding off of the centre electrode. In a given engine the highest ignition voltage is required during part-throttle acceleration because the fuel system is then supplying a lean mixture with increased combustion pressures. To produce such a high voltage, a special ignition system has to be employed.

Two types of conventional ignition systems (called point type ignition systems) are in current use, viz., the 'battery ignition system' and the 'magneto ignition system'. However, both these systems have the major drawbacks of inertia of mechanical components like contact breaker and insufficient dwell period to build up adequate coil field at high engine speeds. Though for a long time, both these systems have been in use and giving satisfactory performance, yet since mid seventees, these are being fast replaced by 'electronic ignition systems'. Point-type and the solid-state (electronic) ignition systems operate in the same way except that they differ in the way the primary current is stopped and restarted.

The conventional point- type systems will be discussed in detail in this chapter, one of the requirements for an efficient engine is the correct amount of heat shock, delivered at the right time. This requirement is the responsibility of the ignition system. The ignition system supplies properly timed high-voltage surges to the spark plugs. These voltage surges cause combustion inside the cylinder. The ignition system must create a spark or current flow across each pair of spark plug electrodes at the proper instant, under all engine operating conditions.

This may sound relatively simple, but when one considers the number of spark plug firings required and the extreme variation in engine operating conditions, it is easy to understand why ignition systems are so complex. If a 6-cylinder engine is running at 4,000 revolutions per minute (rpm), the ignition system must supply 12,000 sparks per minute because the ignition system must fire three spark plugs per revolution. These plug firings must also occur at the correct time and generate the correct amount of heat. If the ignition system fails to do these things, fuel economy, engine performance, and emission levels will be adversely affected.

Diesel Truck Exhaust Stacks, The Hottest Thing On The Road

Diesel Truck Exhaust Stacks, The Hottest Thing On The Road

Exhaust System

Exhaust stacks are the hottest item in the diesel performance aftermarket. Diesel exhaust stacks look great and are functional. In this Article I will attempt to address the functionality of truck exhaust stacks and the different variations of truck exhaust stacks that are available. First I will address the main companies making exhaust stack systems.

MBRP Inc. is the manufacturer of the MBRP Smokers exhaust stacks. The MBRP Smokers exhaust stacks were designed to give the aggressive Big Rig look and the classic MBRP sound. MBRP has both turbo back exhaust stacks systems and universal bed kits that go through the bed and connect onto the stock exhaust system offering the look at a reasonable price. Both the turbo back exhaust stack system and the universal "T" Pipe bed kit are made of stainless steel. The Turbo back exhaust stacks are mandrel bent and will give maximum exhaust flow, fuel mileage gain, power increase, and minimize the EGT's. The diesel exhaust stack "T" pipe bed kits are more for looks, although there still will be a performance gain. MBRP offer 4, 5 and 6 inch exhaust stacks and have the options of a straight cut, mitre or angle cut, a curved end or turn out tip, and bull hauler stacks. These stack variations come in either 36 inch or 48 inches long. There is also an aluminum checker plate cover over the "T" pipe in the bed, it give a nice complete finished look and will keep the hot "T" pipe from touching anything.

Grand Rock truck exhaust systems make chrome exhaust stacks for trucks and big rigs. Chrome exhaust stacks are also very durable and have the mirror finish that many look for. Grand Rocks Chrome exhaust stacks come in 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 inch sizes. Grand Rock also offers their chrome universal Powerflow "T" pipe bed kit for those who are just looking for the big rig look and a small performance gain. They also offer a turbo back chrome exhaust stack system for those looking for all out performance and looks. Chrome exhaust stack systems are very durable and are a lot less expensive. Chrome exhaust stacks look great and are a great value.

Most people that buy truck exhaust stacks have them for either looks or performance gains and maximum exhaust flow. Some though have exhaust stacks for functional reasons. Imagine having a flatbed that you use to haul things day in and day out. Wouldn't it be nice to get the exhaust up above everything you are working on so you aren't constantly choking on exhaust fumes. In conclusion, truck exhaust stacks are functional and look great, and above all, add to performance, economy, and help keep temperatures down so that your expensive truck will last longer than you need it to.

Exhaust Stacks are a great way to increase power and Chrome Exhaust Stacks will give you the look you want on your truck.

Aftermarket Mufflers

Aftermarket Mufflers

Exhaust System

All mufflers are not created equal. Those who choose to place aftermarket mufflers on their vehicles know this fact to be true. Typically, Americans seek out mufflers that keep their cars quiet, in an attempt to not produce noise pollution or to not hear the roar of our own engines. But car enthusiasts, racers, junkies, modifiers, ricers...whatever you want to call them, are a different breed all together.

We could car less about noise pollution. In fact, we get more tickets, than anyone else, for loud cars, because we place mufflers on our vehicles, and we do not care. There is a common misconception about this group, though. Those who want the quiet mufflers, think that we put loud mufflers on our cars for attention. But they are off in left field!

We know a secret! We know that the right muffler, coupled with the perfect exhaust system, can give us more horse power. We know that the mass produced factory mufflers cripple the horse power a vehicle can get. And we are flabbergasted as to why anyone would want to lower their horsepower. Our biggest worry when looking for an aftermarket muffler is which one to buy.

There are tons of manufacturers for mufflers. Magnaflow, Remus, Greddy, Monza and MimoUSA, just to name a few. So what exactly should we look for? The truth is...all of these manufacturers are great. The decision really lies in the reason that someone is searching for an aftermarket muffler.

Everyone who modifies their muffler or complete exhaust system does so for different reasons. If one is purchasing a new muffler for pure sound and cosmetic reasons, they may want to consider one of the many Magnaflow Satin Stainless Oval Mufflers. On the other hand, a racer may want the Magnaflow Stainless Steel Race Series Mufflers.

The Magnaflow Race Series is designed for serious racers. With many race venues requiring sound dampening devices that meet strict DB level requirements, Magnaflow Race Series has worked to meet and exceed these race venue requirements. While the Magnaflow muffler previously mentioned would be acceptable to meet DB level requirements, a street racer would want to consider a different muffler.

The Magnaflow Street Series Muffler was designed with the street racer in mind! With deep sound and optimal performance in mind, this muffler has "The Fast and The Furious" written all over it.

The true enthusiast will not simply settle for a new aftermarket muffler...they will only be satisfied with a whole new exhaust system. When one is looking for an exhaust system, some of the best in the industry comes from Monza. Monza has designed a Pacesetter Performance Exhaust System that is designed to truly boost performance, and connects easily to the catalytic converter.

No matter which way one decides to go, when purchasing an aftermarket muffler, the main concern is the reason for replacing the factory muffler. You can increase style, performance or sound, and in a lot of cases all three, but the reason you are looking for an aftermarket muffler, must be your first concern.

What Chevrolet Silverado Custom Exhaust Performs The Best?

What Chevrolet Silverado Custom Exhaust Performs The Best?

Exhaust System

This blog is more information to help the consumer pick and choose the best exhaust for their later model Chevrolet Silverado. I will mainly focus on the model ranges from 1999-2008(New Body). There are so many new brands and applications to help make that new pickup rumble, there's nothing like a marquee street presence. I will also go over what you will need to know to comply with your local emissions laws.

The primary function of your exhaust system is to dispel gases being produced by your engine. The stock factory setup is always unappealing to look at, how they sound, and how restrictive they can be to the performance of your ride. A more free flowing system can enhance horsepower and torque. And make the change good enough that you wouldn't be obligated to squander thousands of dollars for supercharges and modified engines that may or may not pass local emissions.

There are a couple variables when trying to choose the right system. Is there a price budget you had in mind? Do you want something with deep sound, or maybe a small subdued rumble will suffice? And lastly, would you want dual pipes or maybe a swept side catback will do? Everything just questioned is more or less preference, there are numerous applications that help out.

Dealer installed or aftermarket? Sure you pay more for the dealer installed exhaust, but usually these systems are backed by the dealer or the company that installed them. Plus you wouldn't have to hassle with doing it yourself and taking time out of your busy schedule to get it done. With aftermarket, you can get any customized application you prefer and use any brand that you want, this would be my choice. A huge plus is the aftermarket installation is also worlds cheaper.

What brands are there in the market? There are a lot of manufacturers that have quality systems for various budgets. Want great quality? Borla, Corsa, and Bassani might be the choice for you. Want something affordable? Then maybe Flowmaster, Edelbrock, or Hedman is the one for you. The one I can say is, all of these companies have an established reputation for quality and reliability. The website below will most certainly provide closer specs and available applications for your Chevrolet Silverado.

If you are searching for new levels of performance through your bike, then one of the replacement parts to upgrade is the Harley Davidson exhaust. This can provide you with a complete alteration in the performance and looks of your bike while allowing you to enjoy even more of the ride. If you are considering a replacement part; however, then you want to make sure you get the perfect fit for your bike. Knowing which characteristics to include in your bike can then provide you with a better ride.

When you begin to look at the Harley Davidson exhaust parts that are available, you want to make sure that you are able to get the right set of characteristics. One of the considerations many make is the type of performance that is carried. Getting an exhaust that has a mid to hi-end torque can help to improve the overall quality of riding available. Some will also find different systems that have looks to their bike that helps with the overall ride. The specific shape and system that you consider will also alter the noise level of your bike. Considering these qualities can then help you to find the best bike for your needs.

The Harley Davidson exhaust makes and models will differ because of the torque that is used for performance. For instance, short drag pipes can be added in but will often offer lower engine power, dependent on the length of the pipe. Long straight pipes can also be used for continuous power and more stability to the system. True duals are another make, which consists of two systems on each side of the bike for even more power. The slip - fit mufflers are also known for better performance and are able to lower the sound that is on your bike.

Developing Diagnostic Strategies - Using Exhaust Gas Analysis

Developing Diagnostic Strategies - Using Exhaust Gas Analysis

Exhaust System

Diagnosing emission failures, using the exhaust gas analyzer can be a task. Auto repair is constantly evolving and has become a technical field to work in. Using the proper knowledge, you can find the right auto mechanic to repair your emission failure and be on the road to a cleaner atmosphere along with a fatter wallet. Here we will examine carbon emissions and 5-gas analysis.

Lambda, Combustion Efficiency, Carbon Gases, CAT Efficiency and EVAP Emissions:

- Lambda is perfect air fuel ratio 14.7 parts of air to 1 part of fuel. The closer you get to Lambda, the less carbon emissions. Lambda is a great diagnostic tool, more fuel and less air means rich condition, which will cause the CO and HC gases to be high. We will discuss carbon emissions further in the article.

- Combustion efficiency speaks for itself, the more efficient the combustion is, the cleaner the emissions gases are and the better the fuel mileage is. For checking combustion on your vehicle, consult an auto repair technician with the proper equipment. Carbon Gases pollute the earths atmosphere and can cause a number of Ozone problems including "Acid Rain". There are three very harmful gases; Carbon Monoxide, Hydrocarbons and Oxides of nitrogen.

- Carbon monoxide or (CO), this harmful gas will usually be out of range when there is a fuel problem and the vehicle is rich, considering it is a reading of unburned fuel or raw fuel escaping the tailpipe.

- Hydrocarbons or (HC), this gas is will be seen usually with an ignition problem. HC is read in parts per million or grams per mile. It is the reading of partially burned fuel escaping the tail pipe. Both of these carbon emission gases can be easily diagnosed, using the correct procedure and checks, including your Lambda Numbers.

- Oxides of Nitrogen or (NOX), A gas that has been known to cause acid rain. NOX basically boils down to Cylinder pressure or temperature. The more pressure or heat in the cylinder the higher the NOX will be. If a cylinder exceeds 2,500 degrees the vehicle will produces excessive NOX. This can be achieved in different ways including the exhaust gas recirculation or (EGR) system.

- Catalytic Converter or (CAT) efficiency, the catalytic converter is the most important emissions component on a vehicle with an internal combustion engine. The CAT cleans the carbon emissions to virtually zero when it is 100% efficient. Engineers have created an Ozone preserving automotive part, which needs to be in excellent operating condition.

- Evaporative Emissions or (EVAP) one of the most complicated emission repairs, if you do not have the training and equipment. EVAP emissions pollutes the Ozone 10 times more the vehicles tailpipe because to the CAT. Evaporative Emissions is actual fuel vapor that is creating carbon gases. Gasoline is a huge carcinogen, which means it causes cancer and is very harmful, be careful gassing up your ride. The invention of the catalytic converter has significantly reduced tailpipe emissions therefore EVAP emissions is now the major contributor to carbon gases. I have experienced many different problems concerning the EVAP system and have a great skill for Evaporative system diagnosis.

Most importantly, find the proper auto repair facility to diagnose and repair harmful emissions failures. Not only will this preserve our Ozone, it will also save you money. The best way to locate a great auto mechanic is to look at their emissions work. If they are poor on diagnosing carbon emission failures and do not have a 5-gas analyzer, then they do not have the training and or equipment to diagnose a drive ability problem or check engine light. I have worked on cars all of my life and currently perform quality auto repair. In this article I have examined carbon emissions and 5-Gas analysis.
